What is your strength activity, how long have you been doing it, how’d you get started?
I started powerlifting about a year and half ago. Before that, I did weightlifting for fun and lose weight. When I began I was almost 300lbs and could barely walk a block. After I began to take care of my body, I found a love for powerlifting and love the community it encompasses. I’ve met so many encouraging people through the sport.
What is one obstacle you faced that developed you into the person you are today? Was it worth it?
About two years ago, I went through a divorce. It was hard. It was something I never wanted and I felt like I failed my kids and at life. Some time after that, I found myself homeless with three kids. It was so hard to pick myself up and fight to get back on my feet. I was ashamed and felt like the biggest failure on the planet. It was definitely the hardest thing I ever went through. While I’m thankful for the friends and family who stuck by my side, for the most part I still felt incredibly alone.
Fast forward to over a year later, I’m now starting my own business and proud of myself for never quitting. Life is crazy. One day you’re on top and in the blink of an eye things can change. I remember telling my first senior class at their graduation ceremony that “stuff happens; You never know what life will throw at you or what you’ll get your own self in. It’s how you react that matters.” If it weren’t for my kids, I probably would’ve quit. I really learned a lot about myself and my resilience. No matter what comes my way, I’m determined to see the positivity in it.
What would you tell someone that is afraid to get into your activity?
Do it afraid! It’s seriously a phrase I have tattooed on my body and I live by. Fear is inevitable. But you have to make up in your mind that while I’m afraid, I’m gonna go for it anyway!
What does HER strength mean to you?
As women we endure a lot. But we’re also stronger than what we think and are capable of doing anything. I also believe there is strength in our community. We encourage, inspire and build up each other.
What are your go to activities to help with your mental, physical, and spiritual?
Powerlifting is definitely something I do to not only maintain my physical strength and health but my mental as well. I also love to read and journal. I spend time in prayer and reflection. It’s what keeps me centered.
